Cloth & Loden
Broadcloth loden and loden fabric by the metre are especially suitable for warm, robust and long-lasting textile projects. In this category you will find felted wool fabrics for coats, cloaks, jackets, historical garments, reenactment, LARP, tailoring and special items of clothing.
With our broadcloth and loden qualities, the main difference lies in the dyeing process: loden is mottled because the raw wool is dyed in different colours before spinning. Broadcloth is first woven and then dyed. After that, the further processing is similar: both are fulled and sheared to create a dense wool cloth.

Broadcloth loden and loden fabric by the metre
Anyone looking to buy broadcloth loden is usually searching for a dense, warm and firm wool fabric with a natural material character. Broadcloth loden and loden fabric are especially valued for projects where warmth, body, durability and a high-quality surface are important.
Depending on weight and handle, loden fabric by the metre is suitable for coats, jackets, cloaks, capes, historical clothing, uniform parts, reenactment, LARP and medieval-inspired garments. At the same weight, broadcloth and loden are very similar in use; the decisive factors are mainly colour, mottling, handle, weight and the intended purpose.
What is the difference between broadcloth and loden?
In our qualities, the difference lies mainly in whether the wool is dyed before or after weaving. With loden, the raw wool is dyed in different colours before spinning. This creates the typical mottled effect. With broadcloth, the wool fabric is first woven and then dyed, which can make the colour appear calmer and more even.
After weaving, the further processing is comparable: fulling and shearing create a dense, closed wool fabric. This is why broadcloth and loden can be used in very similar ways when they have the same weight.
Buying loden fabric: what to consider?
If you would like to buy loden fabric or broadcloth loden by the metre, you should first consider the planned use. For a warm coat or cloak, a denser and heavier quality is usually useful. For jackets, capes, historical garments or uniform parts, a medium weight may also be suitable.
Material, weight, handle, colour, mottling and care are also important. For historical garments, reenactment and LARP, the visual effect also plays a major role. Mottled loden qualities often appear more lively, while dyed broadcloth can look calmer.
Care of broadcloth loden and loden
Broadcloth loden and loden should be cared for gently. Thorough airing is often sufficient. If cleaning is necessary, the care instructions for the respective item should always be observed. Wool and loden do not like high heat, unnecessary friction or aggressive detergents.
