Lightweight
Lightweight, thin broadcloth made from merino wool is ideal for beautifully draping dresses and garments that should not be too warm. This quality is especially suitable for historical dress, historical clothing, LARP, reenactment, tailoring and textile projects where a lightweight wool fabric with a beautiful drape is needed.
Compared with medium-weight or heavy broadcloth and loden qualities, lightweight broadcloth appears airier, more flexible and less bulky. This makes it a good choice for dresses, skirts, tunics, light overgarments, layered clothing and finer historical cuts.

Lightweight broadcloth made from merino wool
Lightweight broadcloth made from merino wool combines the natural character of wool with a fine, flexible drape. It is suitable for projects where a natural material is desired, but the fabric should not be too thick, too heavy or too warm.
This quality can be very pleasant especially for dresses, tunics, skirts and garments that should not be too warm. It drapes more lightly than stronger broadcloth or loden fabrics and is therefore well suited for garments with movement, folds or multiple layers.
Lightweight broadcloth loden for dresses and historical garments
Lightweight broadcloth qualities are especially interesting for historical garments, reenactment and LARP when a natural wool fabric is desired that does not appear too heavy. Depending on the cut, lightweight broadcloth can be used for dresses, skirts, tunics, overgarments, light cloaks or accessories.
For very robust coats, heavy cloaks or especially structured outerwear, medium-weight to heavy broadcloth and loden qualities are usually more suitable.
Buying lightweight broadcloth: what to consider?
When buying lightweight broadcloth made from merino wool, you should pay attention to weight, handle, drape, colour, width and care instructions. The most important question is whether the garment should fall softly and fluidly or have more body.
If you are unsure whether this lightweight quality is suitable for your project, it is also worth looking at the parent category Broadcloth & Loden.
