Fibre blends and blended fabrics by the metre

Fibre blends are created when different fibres are combined in one fabric. This allows material properties to complement one another: depending on the quality, wool can add warmth and body, linen can provide a more natural and drier structure, and silk can contribute fineness as well as a special shine or shimmer. The final effect always depends on the specific blend.

For tailoring, historical clothing, historical garments, reenactment and LARP, blended fabrics can be especially interesting when a fabric is meant to combine certain properties. A wool-silk blend feels different from a linen blend or a fabric with several natural fibre components.

Wool blends, linen blends and natural fibre blends

Wool blends can be a good choice when a fabric should provide warmth, but a special surface, softer drape or different handle is desired. Linen blends are interesting when a linen-like appearance is to be combined with additional properties.

Blends with silk can also create special effects. Depending on the fibre content, colour, handle, drape and surface can appear more lively than with a uniform material. Especially with natural fibre blends, it is therefore worth taking a close look at the product information.

Buying blended fabrics: what to consider?

When buying fibre blends by the metre, you should first consider what the fabric will be used for. Will it be used for clothing, undergarments, overgarments, historical garments, a coat, dress, skirt, tunic, accessory or equipment? Fibre content, weight, handle, drape, colour, transparency and care are important.
