FAQ on fabrics, woollen fabric, linen fabric, loden & historical clothing

Answers to fabric selection, care, yard goods, shipping and advice

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about wool fabric, virgin wool, linen fabric, loden, cloth loden, historical fabrics, reenactment fabrics, LARP, uniform fabrics, fabric by the meter, fabric samples, care, ordering and advice.

Many questions cannot be answered in a general way, because the right fabric always depends on the project: garment, season, desired drape, warmth, historical appearance, care and sewing experience all play a role. If you’re unsure, a fabric sample or a short description of your project will help.

Choice of fabrics, natural fabrics & high-quality fabrics

Which fabric is suitable for historical clothing, reenactment or LARP?

For historical clothing, reenactment and LARP, robust natural materials such as wool, loden, linen and matching fibre blends are particularly suitable. The decisive factors are the intended use, season, cut, desired case and historical appearance.

For warming outerwear, woolen cloths and loden are popular. For lighter clothing, underwear or summer clothes, linen is often an option.

Which material is right for my project?

The right fabric depends on what is to be sewn. Important are the garment, season, desired warmth, drape, color, care and sewing experience. Representation also plays a role in historical projects, for example Romans, Vikings, the Middle Ages, Rococo or Napoleonics.

If you are unsure, you should order a fabric sample before ordering or briefly describe the project and seek advice.

How do I recognize a good material?

A good fabric fits the planned project. It should feel comfortable, be stable enough, fall well and fit the intended use. Material, weight, weave, color and feel are more important than just price or thickness.

In historical projects, it is also important to know what time, what representation and what effect are to be achieved.

How do I recognize a good wool fabric?

A good wool fabric feels high-quality, has a suitable density and falls stably or softly, depending on the intended use. The material composition, weight, feel, colour and workmanship are important.

For coats, historical clothing and resilient sewing projects, the best choice is often not the cheapest fabric, but the fabric that really fits the project.

Is a heavy fabric always better?

No. A heavy fabric is not automatically better. For coats or capes, a heavier fabric can be useful. However, it can be too stiff or too warm for tunics, dresses or underwear.

The decisive factor is always the planned garment and when and where it is to be worn.

Why are high-quality fabrics more expensive?

High-quality fabrics often differ in material, workmanship, density, feel, color and durability. Especially with natural fibres and special fabrics, a lot of work goes into production and selection.

For clothes that are supposed to last a long time, a high-quality fabric can be the better choice in the long term.

What is the difference between natural fibers and synthetic fibers?

Natural fibres such as wool, linen or cotton come from natural raw materials. Synthetic fibers are technically manufactured. Natural fibres often feel more alive and go particularly well with historical, high-quality or natural sewing projects.

Synthetic fibres, on the other hand, can be easier to care for or cheaper, but depending on the project, they are less suitable for the historical appearance.

Which fabric is suitable for beginners?

For beginners, fabrics that are not too thin, not too slippery and not too elastic make sense. Mid-weight linen or wool fabrics can work well depending on the project.

If you are unsure, a fabric sample and a short consultation before ordering will help.

Which fabric is suitable for children’s clothing?

For children’s clothing, the fabric should be comfortable, robust and suitable for use. Linen can be suitable for light clothing, wool for warming layers.

It is important that the fabric does not scratch unpleasantly and is suitable for everyday care. For sensitive skin , a fabric sample is particularly useful.

Wool fabric, virgin wool, loden & cloth loden

What does 100% virgin wool mean?

100% virgin wool means that the fabric is made of virgin wool fibres and no other fibres are mixed in. Such fabrics are popular for historical clothing, coats, capes, and high-quality sewing projects.

Nevertheless, wool fabrics can feel very different depending on the weave, weight and finish.

What is the difference between wool and virgin wool?

Wool is the general term for wool fibers. Virgin wool refers to new wool that has been obtained from a living animal and does not come from textiles or recycled fibres that have already been used.

This distinction is important for high-quality historical clothing, reenactment and resilient wool fabrics. If a project is to be particularly durable or historically convincing, you should pay close attention to the material specification.

Where does the wool or virgin wool from TuchundStoff come from?

TuchundStoff buys woolen fabrics from German weaving mills. These fabrics are spun, woven and dyed in Germany.

If the exact origin, composition or suitability for a particular project is important, it is worth making a short inquiry before ordering.

What is the difference between woollen cloth, loden and woollen loden?

Wool cloth is a woven wool fabric that, depending on the processing, can look smooth, dense and high-quality. Loden is usually more densely processed and is well suited for warm, weather-repellent clothing.

The term whale loden is used differently today. Not every modern boiled wool fabric has the strength and warmth of a dense cloth or loden.

Is thick wool fabric automatically warmer?

Not always. A coat or jacket keeps you warm especially when wind and weather are well kept out. A dense, well-milled wool fabric can therefore be very comfortable, even if the thickness is not the only decisive factor.

Important are density, workmanship, grip, fall and the planned use.

Is wool fabric scratchy?

This depends heavily on the type of wool, workmanship and personal sensitivity. Some woollen fabrics feel soft and pleasant, others are more strong or rustic.

If you are sensitive or want to wear the fabric directly on your skin, you should test a fabric sample before ordering.

Is loden water-repellent?

Loden can better keep moisture and wind out due to its dense processing. Loden is popular for capes, coats and outdoor clothing because it has a robust, warming and natural effect.

Loosely woven fabrics cannot offer this effect to the same extent.

What clothing is loden particularly suitable for?

Loden is particularly suitable for coats, jackets, capes, cowls, vests, skirts, dresses, historical clothing and traditional costumes.

Depending on the weight, loden can be soft, falling softly or very stable. For each project, it should be checked whether the fabric should be warming, weatherproof or movable.

Which wool fabric is suitable for a coat?

For a coat, a dense, stable wool fabric or loden is usually suitable. The fabric should be warm enough , keep the wind out well and still fall comfortably.

For a long coat, it is important that the fabric does not become too heavy.

Which wool fabric is suitable for a cape?

Medium to heavy woollen fabrics or loden are particularly suitable for a cape. The fabric should have enough weight for the cape to fall nicely.

At the same time, it should not be so heavy that it becomes uncomfortable to wear.

Can wool shrink or become felted?

Yes, wool can shrink or matt due to heat, friction, moisture and incorrect washing. Therefore, woolen fabric should be handled carefully.

Before sewing or washing, it should always be checked which care is suitable for the respective fabric.

Is wool fabric suitable for summer?

That depends on the wool fabric. Lightweight woolen fabrics can also be comfortable in transitional periods or in summer. Heavy wool fabrics are more suitable for autumn, winter and cooler days.

Weight, weave, cut and how the garment is worn are decisive.

Linen fabric, linen by the metre & natural fabrics

What is linen fabric suitable for?

Linen is well suited for tunics, shirts, dresses, underwear, historical garments, summer clothes and home textiles. The fabric is natural, breathable and often looks a little more rustic than cotton.

Depending on the weight, linen can be light, medium or strong.

Is linen suitable for medieval clothing?

Yes. Linen is very often used for historical clothing and medieval garments. It is especially popular for underwear, shirts, tunics, dresses, headwear and light summer clothing.

For outerwear, on the other hand, wool is often more suitable.

Does linen wrinkle?

Yes, linen wrinkles naturally. This is part of the typical character of the material. Many people appreciate this lively, natural look.

If you want a very smooth surface, you should take this into account when choosing a fabric.

What is the difference between linen and cotton?

Linen is made from flax, cotton from cotton fibers. Linen often looks cooler, firmer and more natural, while cotton is usually softer and easier to care for.

Linen is particularly important for historical clothing because cotton only played a greater role in many historical contexts later.

Do I have to pre-wash linen?

In the case of linen, pre-washing is often useful if the later garment is to be washed. Linen can run in.

Therefore, before cutting, you should consider how the finished piece will be cared for later.

Does linen shrink when washed?

Yes, linen can shrink during washing. The extent to which this happens depends on the fabric, the weave and the washing temperature.

If the finished garment is to be washed later, pre-washing before cutting is often useful.

Which linen fabric is suitable for underwear?

Light to medium-weight linen fabric is usually suitable for underwear. It should be comfortable on the skin and not too stiff.

Linen is particularly often used for shirts, undergarments, tunics and headgear.

Is linen comfortable on the skin?

Linen can be very comfortable, especially in warm weather. It often feels cool and natural. Depending on how it is processed, linen can seem a little firmer at first.

Wearing and washing often softens linen.

Is linen suitable for summer clothing?

Yes, linen is very suitable for summer clothing. It is breathable, has a cooling effect and goes well with shirts, dresses, tunics, skirts and light garments.

For very light clothing, a suitable fabric weight should be chosen.

Which natural fabrics are suitable for historical clothing?

Virgin wool and linen are often used for historical clothing. Linen is particularly suitable for underwear, wool for outerwear, coats, capes and dresses.

The selection depends on the era, project, demand for historical accuracy and season.

Medieval Fabrics, Reenactment Fabrics & LARP

What fabrics go well with Viking clothing?

Linen and wool are often used for Viking-inspired clothing. Linen works well for underwear, shirts and tunics. Wool is suitable for outerwear, coats, trousers, dresses and capes.

The exact selection depends on whether the project is more suitable for everyday use, historically oriented or intended for LARP.

Which fabric is suitable for warm medieval garments?

Wool and loden are particularly suitable for warm medieval garments. Linen is more suitable for underwear or lighter layers.

A combination of a comfortable inner layer and a warming wool layer on the outside makes sense for many historical projects.

Which fabric is suitable for historical underwear?

Linen is often used for historical underwear. It is breathable, natural and comfortable for shirts, underdresses, tunics and headwear.

Depending on the project, a lighter or medium linen should be chosen.

What is the difference between reenactment and LARP in the choice of material?

In reenactment, historical credibility is often more in the foreground. In LARP, comfort, resilience, mobility and effect on distance also count.

Natural fabrics such as wool and linen are popular for both areas, but the requirements can be different.

Does material for reenactment always have to be historically correct?

That depends on your own standards and the event. Some reenactment groups attach great importance to historical accuracy, others are freer.

For LARP or historically inspired clothing, sometimes the effect is more important than complete historical correctness.

Fabrics for dresses, coats, capes, cowls & projects

What fabric is suitable for a winter coat?

Dense woollen fabrics such as cloth or loden are suitable for a winter coat. Warmth, wind protection, weight and drape are important.

The fabric should be stable enough, but still comfortable to wear.

What fabric is suitable for a skirt or dress?

For skirts and dresses, wool, linen or other matching fabrics are suitable, depending on the desired case. Linen looks lighter and more summery, wool warmer and often more flowing.

The decisive factors are cut, length, drapery and wearing comfort.

Which fabric is suitable for trousers?

For trousers, you usually need a fabric that is stable enough and can withstand stress. Depending on the project, woolen fabrics can be well suited.

With historical trousers, special attention should be paid to cut, load and mobility.

Which fabric is suitable as a lining fabric?

Depending on the garment, smooth, lighter fabrics can be used as lining fabrics. For historical or nature-oriented projects, linen or a matching lightweight wool fabric can be a good choice.

The lining should match the outer fabric and not make the garment unnecessarily stiff or heavy.

Which fabric is suitable for a cowl?

Woollen fabrics or loden are particularly suitable for a cowl. The fabric should be warming and drape well, but not too heavy.

For a lighter cowl, a lighter wool fabric can be useful.

Which fabric is suitable for a vest?

The decisive factors are the cut, region, desired look and wearing comfort. For special projects, a fabric sample is highly recommended.

Which fabric is suitable for tailoring?

Fabrics that go well with the cut and the desired wearing comfort are suitable for tailoring. The drape, weight, handle, colour and quality are important.

For high-quality projects, it is worth ordering a sample in advance and carefully checking the choice of fabric.

Uniform fabrics & historical uniform fabric

What fabric is right for a Napoleonic uniform?

For Napoleonic uniforms, depending on the representation, cut and requirements, dense woollen fabrics, cloth fabrics or matching uniform fabrics are particularly suitable.

The important factors are the era, regiment, colour, desired accuracy, fabric weight and intended use. A blanket recommendation is difficult because historical uniforms can be very different.

What fabric is right for a Saxon uniform?

For a Saxon uniform, the choice of fabric depends heavily on the period, unit, color, cut and desired historical accuracy.

Dense woollen fabrics or matching uniform fabrics are often the right direction. For good advice , information on the era, template, colour, required quantity, fabric thickness and schedule is particularly helpful.

Fabrics by the metre, running metre, fabric width & cutting

What does lfm mean for fabrics?

lfm means running meter. A running meter is a meter of fabric in the full width of the fabric. For example, if a fabric is 150 cm wide, you will get a piece of 100 cm × 150 cm at 1 running metre.

What does fabric width mean?

The fabric width indicates how wide the fabric lies on the bale. In the case of yard goods, the desired length is purchased in the full width.

The fabric width is important to calculate how much material is needed for a pattern.

What does fabric weight mean?

Fabric weight describes how light or heavy a fabric is. It can be stated per square metre or per linear metre.

Weight helps to assess whether a fabric is light, medium or heavy.

Why are fabric weights sometimes given differently?

Fabric weight can be specified per linear meter or per square meter. This is important when comparing because a wide fabric weighs more per linear metre than a narrower fabric.

Therefore, when comparing fabrics, you should always pay attention to the area or length to which the weight specification refers .

How much fabric do I need for my project?

This depends on the cut, body size, fabric width, pattern course and desired length. For safe planning, you should check the cut.

In the case of historical garments, it is often worthwhile to plan generously so that the cut and drape fit.

Why should I plan more fabric before cutting?

When cutting, seam allowances, pattern progression, shrinkage, error corrections, or changes to the pattern may require additional fabric.

Especially with historical garments, pleats, long hems or hoods, a little reserve is often useful.

Can I order small quantities?

This depends on the respective product and the minimum quantity set in the shop. For yard goods, the quantity information on the product page should always be observed.

What does minimum quantity mean for yard goods?

The minimum quantity indicates the length from which a substance can be ordered. Some fabrics cannot be cut in arbitrarily small quantities.

The exact minimum quantity can be found directly with the respective product.

Is fabric delivered in one piece?

Goods by the metre are delivered in one piece if the ordered quantity is available. There may be exceptions for very large quantities or residual stocks.

If a continuous piece is particularly important, this should be requested before ordering.

Can I reorder fabric?

This is not always guaranteed. Fabrics may be sold out or come from a different batch. This may result in slight color deviations.

If you are planning a larger project, you should order the required quantity as completely as possible.

Fabric Samples, Colors, Color Matching & Pattern Selection

Why do fabric colors sometimes look different on the screen?

Screens display colors differently. Brightness, device settings and lighting conditions can change the color impression.

That’s why fabric samples are particularly useful when color, feel and thickness have to fit exactly.

Can I order fabric samples?

Yes. Fabric samples are a good decision-making aid when assessing colour, feel, thickness and surface.

When ordering or inquiring, it is important to specify which colours, types of fabrics, quantities and projects are interesting so that suitable samples can be selected.

What is the approximate size of fabric samples?

Fabric samples are small material samples that can be used to better assess color, feel, strength, and surface. The exact size may vary depending on the fabric.

They are not intended for cutting or processing, but as a decision-making aid before ordering.

What information helps with the selection of samples?

Information about the planned project, the desired color, the garment, the season, the required quantity and the desired fabric feel are helpful.

The more precise the request, the better suitable samples can be selected.

Can fabrics from different deliveries vary in colour?

Yes, that can happen. Different dye lots can have small color differences.

Therefore, for larger projects, it makes sense to order enough fabric at once.

What do I do if I want to combine several fabrics in colour?

Then fabric samples are particularly useful. Colors often have a different effect next to each other than individually.

For example, if you want to combine wool, linen and braids, you should compare the materials in real light if possible.

Are all fabrics permanently available in the range?

Not every fabric is permanently available. Some fabrics may be leaked, only available temporarily, or come later from another batch.

If you need a specific fabric for a larger project, you should order the required quantity as early as possible .

What do I do if a fabric is sold out?

If a fabric is sold out, an alternative can be sought. Depending on the material, colour, weight and intended use, a similar fabric can often be found.

For important projects, it is worth making a short enquiry with a description of the desired fabric.

Care, preparation & sewing of natural materials

How do I care for wool fabric properly?

Woolen fabric should be handled with care. Ventilation and gentle brushing are often sufficient. Washing, rubbing, spinning or strong temperature changes can change or felt wool.

Before processing, the care instructions for the respective fabric should always be observed.

Do I need to wash wool fabric before sewing?

Wool fabric should not simply be pre-washed like cotton. Wool can shrink or become matted due to heat, friction and moisture.

Before cutting, it should be checked which pre-treatment makes sense for the specific substance.

Should I iron fabric before sewing?

Many fabrics should lie flat before cutting. With wool and delicate fabrics, you should be careful with steam, temperature and pressure.

It is best to test ironing first on a small corner or a sample piece.

Does woolen fabric fray strongly?

That depends on binding, density and processing. Densely woven or milled woollen fabrics fray less than loosely woven fabrics.

For clean processing, however, suitable seam allowances and serging are important.

Can I sew wool fabric with a normal sewing machine?

Many woollen fabrics can be processed with a normal household sewing machine. A suitable needle, good yarn and the right setting are important.

For very thick or solid fabrics, you should test on a leftover piece beforehand.

What needle do I need for wool fabric?

Depending on the thickness, universal needles or stronger needles are usually suitable for woolen fabrics. For thick fabrics, the needle should be stable enough.

It is best to test the stitch pattern and thread tension on a test piece before actually sewing.

How do I remove odors from wool fabric?

Careful ventilation in the fresh air often helps. Wool should not be washed unnecessarily. Often, airing out or gently brushing out is sufficient.

If washing is necessary, the fabric should be handled very carefully and the respective care recommendation should be observed.
